Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino is on his way to returning to full fitness after video footage showed him back in training.
The Spanish midfielder, who originally joined the Magpies on a season-long loan deal from Borussia Dortmund, has been ruled out of the club’s last two games with a back injury, which also saw him miss out on playing for Spain’s under-21 side over the international break.
However footage on Spanish radio station Carrousel DepNavarra’s official Twitter account has shown the 21-year-old back in training, which will be a major boost to the Magpies.
The tweet confirmed that he has been recovering at former club Osasuna before travelling back to Tyneside on Friday to link up with his current club team mates.

The midfield maestro had been a key member of the Magpies’ squad prior to his layoff, having appeared in all of the club’s league matches either in the starting XI or off the bench, and scored his first goal in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, his last outing prior to the injury blow.
While originally at St James’ Park on a temporary deal, he impressed enough to convince the Magpies to secure him from German giants Dortmund after just seven games, as he signed a five-year-deal committing him to the club.
In other Newcastle United news, a report has made an outrageous claim over Mike Ashley’s true intentions regarding a proposed takeover.
