Viktor Gyokeres remains the number-one target for Ruben Amorim at Man United despite considering moves to sign a number of other strikers.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 26-year-old's price tag is currently a concern, but has not deterred their interest.

However, the Sporting CP striker remains their top priority as his previous work under Ruben Amorim has eased concerns about his ability to adapt to their team.

The Man United board had heavily backed Erik ten Hag to bring in a number of his former players, with varying degrees of success.

As a result, they have been warned against blindly backing the managers, but there is also a belief that Gyokeres would be the "perfect fit" in an area they have struggled this season.

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at United during their most successful period, insisted that the current striker options have become "a big problem" and a new signing is expected.

"Gyokeres is still their top target for that position," he told Football Insider.

"He's the one Amorim wants, because I think there is a big problem with the strikers at the moment.

"They do have to be careful with just backing the manager, because we saw what happened under Ten Hag where they spent a lot of money with not a lot of return.

"But Ron Atkinson once said to me - everybody can make a mistake in the transfer market, but not when it's a player you've had before.

"Amorim will know all about Gyokeres and his qualities and what he'll bring to the team.

"We saw how well he played under him at Sporting, and if that can translate to the Premier League, he will be the perfect option.

“But we’ve got to a point now where, because he’s so important for Sporting, he’s going to cost a huge price tag to bring him back to England.

“When you look at the money United have spent on Zirkzee and Hojlund, more than £100million, I’m not sure they can go and spend the sort of money they want for Gyokeres.

"Maybe in the summer, but definitely not this month."
