Warburton shares Rangers January striker plan

By Matt Farr

Rangers manager Mark Warbuton has insisted that in-form goalscorer Martyn Waghorn is not for sale.

According to the Daily Record, the striker’s recent eye for goal has been attracting interest from the English Championship, but Warburton has ruled out any potential move next month.

Waghorn surged back into goalscoring form by netting a brace in Rangers’ win over Hamilton on Friday night, which was only his first start for the Scottish club since October 14.

The 26-year-old has made 17 appearances so far for Rangers, contributing 1o goals and three assists in all competitions, but had not scored in the league since the opening day win over Hamilton.

Celtic are currently eight points clear of Rangers as the league leaders, and with three extra games still to play it seems highly unlikely that Warburton’s side will be able to catch their Old Firm rivals.

With the title a very distant prospect, Warburton has instead turned his attention to securing second place. Rangers currently hold a seven point advantage over Aberdeen, but they have two games in hand over Rangers.

To ensure the important runner-up spot, Warburton is reluctant to part ways with any of his players when the transfer window re-opens in January.

He told the Daily Record: “Martyn didn’t show us anything we didn’t know. I see him day in, day out. He came back, he has been patient and he showed how good he can be tonight.

“All we can say is we don’t want to lose anyone and if we do we lose them on our terms as opposed to the rival club’s terms. That’s our promise to the Rangers supporters.

“I think Martyn enjoys playing for Rangers, it’s a simple as that.

“He’s a top professional, his family are settled, and Martyn, as all the other players are, is wanted here at Rangers. Long may that continue.”

Both Derby and Bristol City had been interested in signing the former Wigan striker in January, but it remains to be seen whether Warburton’s tough stance will put them off making a formal approach.
