The forward missed the start of the season through injury but went was without a goal in the league in four games before Sunday.

He bagged 14 goals in 37 league games during his debut season in the top flight.

“He still knows where the goal is,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You don’t lose that overnight. Brilliant players don’t lose that. Even the best go through dry spells.

“It’s has been all change at Villa this summer.

“He was used to Grealish creating chances and he’s not there now. He’s had to adapt.

“He will always know where the goal is and I’m delighted he’s back playing again.

“Watkins is a massive player for Villa and a player of his quality will score an extraordinary amount of goals if he stays fit.

“He was so sharp at the weekend, he looked on-form.
