Wenger issues warning to Arsenal 22-year-old, fears he is heading for Europe in summer

By Matt Bullin

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged Hector Bellerin not to go to the European Under-21 Championship this summer.

Despite already having made three appearances for the Spain senior side, Wenger believes the 22-year-old is likely to be picked in Albert Celades’ squad for the tournament in Poland.

Bellerin has played 32 games in all competitions for the Gunners this term and has been a regular at right-back for the last two campaigns.

His boss at Arsenal has told him not to play this summer, instead telling him to rest up for an important season.

As quoted by the Daily Express, Wenger said of Bellerin playing for the Under-21s: “It’s not ideal after a long season. He should have a rest and prepare for next season.”

However Wenger does not seem to believe his warning will be heard, as he continued: “The Spanish players love to play for their country and I think he will go as he loves to play for Spain.”

The 22-year-old played 90 minutes in his side’s last match as they fell to a shock 3-0 loss at Selhurst Park to Crystal Palace.

Following the results this weekend Arsenal are back in seventh in the Premier League, three points behind Everton in sixth, although the Gunners do have three games in hand.

Next up for Wenger’s side is a trip to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough on Monday evening.
