West Brom: Keith Wyness drops verdict on points deduction appeal and when it could happen
West Brom’s Championship status hangs in the balance as the EFL have been urged to resolve their PSR case as soon as possible.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after it was reported that West Brom had been charged by the EFL with an alleged breach of profit and sustainability rules.
The EFL have not spoken out on the matter, whilst West Brom say that they have “fully complied” with the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules.
Any breach could have an impact on the Baggies, as a points deduction could be imposed on the club this season.
West Brom currently sit just two points above the Championship relegation zone, meaning they would likely be relegated to League One if they are hit with a points deduction.
EFL have put ‘fear’ into West Brom’s Championship survival chances
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the situation must be resolved as soon as possible.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the matter will be resolved behind closed doors.
| Operating Loss | £17m |
| Revenue | £30.4m |
| Matchday Revenue | £6.8m |
| Commercial Revenue | £8.2m |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Now, if the EFL is right, what’s wrong is we are at the end of the season in a crucial relegation battle and nobody knows what points total is going to keep them up.
“That’s got to be wrong from an EFL business point of view. This has got to be resolved quickly. If the EFL say, yes, this is wrong, and you could have a two or three-point deduction, there’s got to be an appeal. Then that will push it into next season, because it would be hard if there’s an appeal going to either relegate West Brom or not on the basis of that.
“That would be an incredibly difficult position. But it’s another case where the authorities have got themselves into real issues around the application of PSR, and PSR has got a lot of problems with it. This is another one that’s coming out as causing a big football issue about relegation.
“My hunch is that it’s going to be resolved behind closed doors one way or another, but for the EFL to climb down would be a lot for them to do that. To say that, we now agree that this is right, because they’ve really put the fear into the West Brom fans and the club themselves.
“If they have to then climb down, it’d be very bad. But also, if the club has to go into appeal, then that would mean they’ve got their PSR calculations badly wrong.
“Somebody is going to end up with egg on their face at some stage here. And it’s the wrong time of year to be doing this and having these battles. There’s got to be a better way to go forward.”
West Brom remain in pursuit of next permanent manager
West Brom have been on a seven-game unbeaten streak under interim manager James Morrison, and the club legend has been tipped to become boss on a permanent basis.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that West Brom should continue with Morrison in charge in order to stabilise the club on and off the pitch.
Whilst Morrison could put together a strong claim for the permanent role, Darren Moore and Slaven Bilic have also been linked with returns to The Hawthorns.
