Sources: Major update on Johnstone future at West Brom after West Ham bid

Sam Johnstone is set to stay at West Brom beyond the summer window after his West Ham dream collapsed, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The goalkeeper has been keen to quit the Hawthorns this summer following their relegation to the Championship.

But a West Brom source has told Football Insider that Johnstone’s options are now looking limited following West Ham’s capture of Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain.

The England international is now prepared to wait and see out his deal before moving on a free transfer next summer and having his pick of clubs.

West Brom wanted more than £15million for Johnstone this summer, but West Ham only offered £11m before moving for Areola.

Johnstone penned a four-year contract when he signed for Albion from Man United in a reported £6.5m deal in 2018.

The shot-stopper was named on the bench for the Baggies in their season-opening 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last Saturday.

David Button instead started between the sticks for West Brom after making just one league appearance in the 2020-21 top-flight campaign.

But reports suggest Valerien Ismael will restore him to the starting lineup for tomorrow’s meeting with Luton Town.

Johnstone failed to make a senior appearance for Man United during his seven years at Old Trafford.

He was sent out on loan no fewer than 10 times, making well over 100 appearances in the Football League in the process.

Johnstone was named West Brom’s Supporters’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year for 2020-21.

His exploits were enough to earn him his first England cap in a 1-0 pre-Euros friendly win over Romania.
