Sources: West Brom set to pull plug on Wilder pursuit after talks
West Brom are set to pull the plug on appointing Chris Wilder as their new manager, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Midlands club have held extensive talks with Wilder, 53, about being the permanent replacement for Sam Allardyce.
But a West Brom source has told Football Insider the board are harbouring major reservations over giving the job to Wilder and are ready to turn to alternative candidates.
That would comes as a major surprise on a number of fronts.
Wilder has been the hot favourite to land the vacant job for nearly a week and there were widespread reports last week that a deal was all but done.
The former Sheffield United boss also has an impressive CV and a proven track in securing promotion from the Championship.
His potential appointment had been greeted with enthusiasm among supporters keen on an instant Premier League return.
It will be intriguing where West Brom turn next, if they do indeed end talks with the plain-speaking Yorkshireman.
Wilder is believed to be keen on a return to management after leaving United by mutual consent in March.
Like Allardyce, he oversaw a team that was eventually comfortably relegated.
However, Wilder also has an extremely impressive pedigree in the EFL and has overseen three promotions in the lowers leagues, two at United and one at Northampton Town.
Wilder was also at the helm for the best Premier League campaign in United's history as they finished ninth in their first season back in the top flight.
