Michail Antonio’s miss against Arsenal on Sunday was one for the blooper reel and could come back to bite West Ham as they chase the top-four.
That is according to ex-Premier League goalscorer Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Antonio hit the post from two yards with the goal at his mercy as the Irons drew 3-3 with their London rivals.
A win for David Moyes’ side would have seen them move level on points with Chelsea in their hunt for Champions League football.
The comedy miss took place in the 76th minute with the scores at 3-2, meaning Alexandre Lacazette’s header seven minutes later brought the Gunners level.
Antonio is West Ham’s only recognised striker at present and has been in solid form in 2020-21, with seven goals and five assists in 18 Premier League starts
Whelan was mystified as to how Antonio managed to miss the target and claimed that dropped points could be curtains for West Ham’s Champions League aspirations.
“I’ve got no idea how he missed that, absolutely no idea,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“Nine times out of 10, he buries it. But that was just the way the game was turning. Arsenal had the momentum.
“Things just weren’t happening for West Ham likes they were at the beginning of the game.
“And that could be a big moment if they want European football, let’s not forget.”
Antonio signed for West Ham for £7million from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
Although originally a winger, he has gradually developed into an out-and-out striker and has netted 45 times in 175 Hammers appearances.
