West Ham: Expert accuses David Moyes of 'smoke and mirrors' over Issa Diop - 'It's all a game'

West Ham boss David Moyes is refusing to give the media the answers they want about Issa Diop.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Diop, 25, has been sidelined with an ankle injury since the Hammers’ 1-1 draw with Burnley earlier this month (17 April).

The Guardian reported two days later that the French centre-back could be ruled out for the rest of the season.

As quoted by club media last Friday (22 April), Moyes said “you always hope to get your players back quicker” and refused to put a timescale on Diop.

And Dinnery claims that Moyes knows exactly what he is doing by leaving the door open for a return this season.

“There’s a little bit of smoke and mirrors in this one,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“You never want to back yourself into a corner. Moyes knows the way the media works. This is all a game.

“For the most part this season, Moyes has been pretty economical in terms of the insight he has given with injuries and availability.

“He’s a wily old character. He is used to being in front of the cameras and he knows the right things to say.

“We can’t categorically state that he’s out of the season.”

“If he does come back this season, great. If he doesn’t, you haven’t lost anything.

“What you don’t want is people hanging their hat on things you’ve said and then that coming back to bite you.”

Craig Dawson is now the Irons’ only fit centre-back, but he is suspended for the game against Arsenal on Sunday (1 May).

He is, however, available for tonight’s (28 April) Europa League clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
