Kieran Maguire issues 'depressing' West Ham claim as private political payment revealed

It is “depressing” that the likes of West Ham appear to have successfully convinced the Government to water down the contents of the Fan-Led Review.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the current status of the review amid the latest from Whitehall.

The recommendations of Tracey Crouch MP’s project, including the historic proposal of an independent regulator to safeguard the English game, were given the green light by Boris Johnson’s government in April.

But the advent of the Lizz Truss’ era has cast doubt on whether the manifesto will be rolled out in full force.

As quoted by BBC Sport on Tuesday (27 September), new sports minister Stuart Andrew has acknowledged that reforms to football governance structures are necessary.

But the MP for Pudsey has not outlined any specifics or reassured supporters that independent regulation is still on the horizon.

Private Eye, via Martin Calladine on Twitter last Friday (23 September), revealed that West Ham co-owner David Sullivan recently made a £25,000 donation to the Conservative Party.

Maguire claims that the Hammers will be delighted if the power of the independent regulator is blunted.

“With the Government performing U-turns daily, it’s difficult to work out where it is with regards to its commitment to an independent regulator,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It’s very depressing for those people who feel that self-regulation has cause more harm than good.

“However, it seems the new sports minister is committing itself to a white paper before the end of the year.

“It will be interesting to see how much of a dilution there is of the proposals that were in the Tracey Crouch report.

“West Ham by aligning themselves with the Tory party clearly wanted the independent regulator to not take place. That is indicated by some of the comments we have seen from Karen Brady.

“I expect she is likely to be disappointed, although just how disappointed we’ll have to see because the devil is very much in the detail.”
