West Ham expert savages Ben Johnson after what he saw him do 'on the bench'

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

West Ham United should allow Ben Johnson to leave the club this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed the full-back was not strong enough and was adamant that Vladimir Coufal was a superior option.

The 24-year-old, whose deal expires this summer, has reportedly turned down two contract offers from West Ham and now looks set to join London rivals Crystal Palace next season as a free agent.

The Hammers academy graduate has made 19 appearances this season in all competitions, but only seven of these were in the starting line-up.

Despite being valued by the club and having impressive versatility, Johnson has never managed a consistent run in the team and has often been utilised as a bit-part player from the bench.

McAvennie feels that his time in Stratford must come to an end now.

"I remember West Ham were getting battered once and he was smiling on the bench, I was stunned," he told Football Insider.

"This isn't good, it's not a good trait for me.

"It stuck with me and I'm sure some of the fans would have seen that as well.

"There's no doubt the boy can play, but Coufal is a better player for me.

"He's more my kind of player, he likes a tackle and he's a wholehearted player.

"The fans love that.

"Johnson is just not a strong enough boy for me and I would let him go."
