West Ham fans react on Twitter to Ayew injury on debut

By Alex Taylor

Andre Ayew had his West Ham debut cut short after sustaining a thigh injury in his team’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Monday night – and fans have come out in force to support the player.

The forward sustained the injury after chasing Eden Hazard back towards his own goal and pulled up after failing to prevent the Belgium international’s shot on-goal.

The Ghanaian star left the Stamford Bridge pitch just 34 minutes into the match clutching his right-thigh and West Ham fans will now await further news of the injury.

Given that it appeared to be a muscle injury, Ayew is facing a spell of the sidelines in what is likely to be a significant blow for his new club.

Supporters are concerned about their new star man and have passed on their get-well-soon messages to the player.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The Swansea hitman scored 12 goals last season in all competitions and caught the attention of Bilic during his extensive search for a top class striker.

West Ham had been very public in their pursuit of a top drawer goal-scorer this summer and reportedly failed with bids for the likes of AC Milan’s Carlos Bacca, Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette and Michy Batshuayi, before settling on Ayew.

Bilic will be frustrated at the early injury and will be hoping that his side’s most expensive ever signing can make a swift recovery and feature extensively in West Ham’s domestic campaign.

In other West Ham transfer news, Paul Merson has picked both Dimitri Payet and Cheikhou Kouyate in his combined Chelsea and West Ham six-a-side team.
