West Ham fans are desperate to see their club re-sign Jermain Defoe on Twitter after he scored on his England return against Lithuania.

Defoe, 34, made his first Three Lions appearance since November 2013 on Sunday, and broke the deadlock in the first half with a well-timed finish in front of the Wembley crowd.

The Sun claims that the Hammers are prepared to sign the proven Premier League goalscorer, and could get him on a free transfer if Sunderland are relegated come May.

Despite Sunderland sitting at the bottom of the table and remaining seven points adrift of safety, Defoe has scored an impressive 14 goals in 28 league games this season.

West Ham are crying out for a new striker, with Andy Carroll yet to prove he has put his injury demons behind him. Diafra Sakho has been sidelined all season, making just two 2016-17 appearances.

That has seen Hammers fans take to Twitter to urge their club to re-sign Defoe, 13 years after he left Upton Park to join London rivals Tottenham in 2004.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

During his five-year spell with the Hammers, Defoe scored 41 goals in 105 league and cup appearances and has since had spells with Portsmouth, Toronto and now Sunderland.

In other West Ham transfer news, fans have reacted on Twitter to news that the club are reportedly interested in this former Arsenal star.
