It is believed that the former Manchester United forward has a £13million release clause tied into his deal at Leverkusen, where he has proved himself to be a Bundesliga goal machine with 28 goals in 54 league matches there.
German media outlet Bild has previously reported that Tottenham and French club Lyon are also in pursuit of Hernandez, who also goes by the name of Chicharito.
Bild claims that the 94-times Mexico international is entering the final year of his contract with Leverkusen.
Hernandez is no stranger to the Premier League after a enjoying a spell at Manchester United.
He made 158 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring 59 goals as he lifted two English league titles.
Slaven Bilic is thought to be on the lookout for a new striker this summer after his Hammers side endured a frustrating season last time out which wasn’t helped by constant injuries to Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho.
Football Insider Verdict
West Ham definitely need a new source of goals this summer and Hernandez is definitely someone that can provide that. The Mexican forward probably has the ability to play in the Champions League, which means he’d be a real coup for the Hammers, but that could also suggest he may prefer a move to Tottenham if they come calling. After bids of £22million were reportedly turned down for Anthony Modeste and Cedric Bakambu, Hernandez would represent a much cheaper deal and could lead Bilic’s line for the next few years. The Irons should then look to sell Sakho to balance the books.
