West Ham news: Ex-Fifa official 'amazed' as Craig Dawson flashpoint missed by referee

Keith Hackett has admitted he was “amazed” Jarred Gillett did not immediately award Leicester City a penalty in their 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday (12 November) instead of relying on VAR.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee praised the VAR process for quickly correcting Gillett’s decision after Craig Dawson’s foul on Patson Daka.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme, Daka had got in behind the West Ham defence before he was brought down by Dawson inside the penalty area.

The referee allowed the game to continue before VAR intervened and he reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor before pointing to the spot.

Youri Tielemans missed the subsequent spot-kick but Leicester were still able to collect all three points.

“I was amazed,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I like Jarred Gillett but I was rather surprised that he needed VAR.

“OK, if he’s slightly unsure and his angle is not as good I can see it. But I was a bit surprised.

“He is a good referee Jarred Gillett, I’m surprised he didn’t give it straight away.

“Is this symptomatic of VAR?

“Let me say that I think the process was pretty speedy and worked well so let’s just say that rather than criticise the referee.

“It was a penalty kick, they got the decision right in the end.

“I think this guy needs more games. With the quality of performances he’s delivering I’m surprised he’s not being used more often in the Premier League.”
