Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has urged clubs like West Ham to push back against an independent regulator and agree a settlement with EFL sides.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – cited the Irons as a club who have benefitted from signing EFL stars such as Jarrod Bowen.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are also against the deal, which would see lower league sides earn a share of nearly £1billion over six years.

West Ham must act now and avoid 'disaster', says Wyness

It is believed that the UK government’s new football regulator could now get involved and impose a deal on Premier League sides to provide funding for the wider pyramid.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There is a football pyramid in England and West Ham have benefitted from players coming up from the EFL, among other clubs.

“Jarrod Bowen came through from non-league and is now an England international.

“There are many cases of youngsters coming through that Premier League clubs.

“I think a negotiated settlement for the wider pyramid is the answer, rather than having a regulator enforcing things.

“I think a regulator would be a disaster.

“There’s got to be a U-turn and an agreement between the clubs in the pyramid, with the likes of West Ham leading the way. Hopefully, we can avoid this massive legal bureaucracy.”
