West Ham in running to sign January available PL midfielder - report

By Harvey Byrne

West Ham are in a race with Brighton for Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to a report.

The Evening Standard has named the Hammers as in “the running” for the 20-year-old, who is available on a loan deal in January.

However, it is also stated that Chelsea want assurances that Loftus-Cheek will get game-time before letting him move.

He is more likely to see more time on the pitch at the promotion chasing Seagulls, while West Ham’s midfield is made up of Cheikhou Kouyate, Pedro Obiang and stalwart Mark Noble.

However, a temporary move to a fellow Premier League side would benefit Loftus-Cheek’s career a lot more.

The England Under-21 international is thought of as a very bright prospect, but the Blues don’t have a great record of bringing through young players and he has played just three times in all competitions this season.

Meanwhile, West Ham will be looking for targets in the winter window as they sit in 13th in the Premier League table.

The east London side signed a number of high profile flops from around Europe in the summer and they may now be looking for players closer to the shores.

Football Insider verdict:

Loftus-Cheek would be a luxury player for West Ham, but he would be unlikely to help the Hammers move further away from the relegation zone. The east London side went on a three match winning run in December in fixtures against Burnley, Hull and Swansea, which they would have all been expected to win. They have since lost their last two matches against Leicester and Manchester United and they are now in danger of falling back down the table. Slaven Bilic must make additions in January, but he can’t bring in 20-year-old’s who he needs to play with the danger of relegation.
