Manchester United are preparing to make a concerted move for Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window, according to a report.
French outlet Le 10 Sport claim Jose Mourinho has identified Payet as his priority signing next month and is preparing to make a huge bid for the Hammers star in an attempt to strengthen his squad.
According to the Express, Paris Saint German are also interested in the West Ham playmaker and the London outfit could face a battle to fend off a number of suitors.
This season Payet has not performed at the level of his debut Hammers campaign and, as a result, the team are currently struggling to find form in the Premier League.
They are in 17th place in the league table and, despite signing a new contract extension earlier this year, Payet may be tempted by a move elsewhere given the London club’s major fall from grace.
The report claims Mourinho is now eyeing a move for Payet because his chances of signing another forward he favours, Antoine Griezmann, are not very high.
Payet, 29, currently has a contract which will keep him in London until 2021 and he has made 19 total appearances this season but has scored just four goals for West Ham.
Payet starred at the European Championships for France, scoring three goals on the route to the final.
Football Insider verdict:
Payet pledged his future to West Ham in February but he must have believed the team would be challenging for a European spot this season. They have looked poor in comparison to last season so it would be no surprise to see Payet go next summer if their situation doesn’t improve. It’s unlikely he would abandon ship in January though and Mourinho would probably have more success if he was to renew his interest at the end of the season. It would take a huge fee to pry him away though and United already have plenty of attacking options so they may not be willing to spend too much.
In other West Ham news, this player will be Liverpool’s worst nightmare on Saturday.
