West Ham United told to U-turn on John Egan after £12m reveal - pundit

Alan Hutton has claimed John Egan is not the signing to take West Ham to the “next level”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the Hammers “need reinforcements” at the moment.

According to the Sun (10 September), David Moyes’s side is planning a £12million move for the 29-year-old in the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international was said to be a top target for the Irons boss during the summer window but a move was refused by Sheffield United.

The centre-back currently has two years remaining on his contract at Bramall Lane.

Hutton suggested Egan might not be the right player for West Ham if they are aiming for a top six finish.

He’s a good player, he’s obviously got that Premier League experience,” he told Football Insider.

Is he going to take them to the next level? No. I think at Sheffield United he was very strong, captain material, that type. He knows what it’s all about, he does give you something and it’s an area where maybe West Ham feel they need to strengthen a little bit.

They’re in a difficult position at this moment in time and they feel that they need reinforcements. They have to climb up the table quickly, you don’t want to get bogged down in a relegation scrap so I think him coming in adds something to your team. But, it depends where they see themselves. Do they see themselves challenging for the top six? It’s going to be very difficult.

The London club have only won one Premier League game this season.

They are currently 18th in the English top flight.
