Jarrod Bowen reacts as Mateus Fernandes completes West Ham move to Tottenham
Jarrod Bowen has reacted on social media after Mateus Fernandes confirmed his £85million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The midfielder only joined West Ham in a £42m deal from Southampton last summer, but was keen to leave after they were relegated to the Championship.
The 21-year-old has become the Lilywhites' record signing for the time being, until the £100m signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United is confirmed in due course.
Fernandes enjoyed a superb season and was also of interest to Manchester United, who were ultimately unwilling to meet the asking price.
Roberto De Zerbi is keen to lead a dramatic overhaul of his squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Fernandes and Tonali joining Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson to have joined already this summer.
Further moves are to be targeted in the coming weeks, with the next area of focus likely to be the forward line.
Jarrod Bowen likes Mateus Fernandes farewell
Fernandes was among several players likely to leave West Ham after relegation was confirmed.
El Hadji Malick Diouf, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are among the other potential exits, but the most uncertainty lies around Bowen.
It was suspected that the West Ham captain would not want to spend a year of his prime in the Championship, but he is yet indicate an intention to leave.
The Hammers are reportedly looking for around £50m for Bowen, and Fernandes' move to Tottenham has revealed that they will not budge.
Following confirmation of his move on Thursday, the midfielder posted a statement on Instagram and wrote: "I wish the club and everyone connected with it nothing but success, and I’m certain that better days are ahead."
Bowen, along with Axel Disasi, Mavropanos, Kyle Walker-Peters and Luis Guilherme, liked the post.
Fernandes can be a coup for Tottenham
The excitement surrounding Fernandes directly stems from just how impressive he was last season.
The midfielder managed to stand out, even in a relegation-battling team and at the age of just 21.
His ceiling is undoubtedly far higher than the level he is right now, and that is why Tottenham have paid such a big fee.
In De Zerbi, they have the manager who helped develop Billy Gilmour and Moises Caicedo. Fernandes will be his next project.
