Callum Wilson backed to agree extension and be West Ham 'superstar' - Keith Wyness

Callum Wilson would be best served by staying at West Ham United for another season.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the striker's agent should be encouraging him to stay at the London Stadium.

This comes after suggestions from ExWHUEmployee that the Hammers have put a new one-year contract on the table for the 34-year-old, who has just left the club upon the expiry of his current deal.

Wyness believes that Wilson still has what it takes to be hugely effective in the Championship, and would likely take West Ham straight back to the Premier League.

The former Newcastle man struck seven league goals from just 11 starts last term, and has a wide range of suitors this summer.

Coventry and Ipswich have both been linked with a move for him in recent weeks, and The Athletic have now reported that he is in talks with Brentford.

Keith Wyness: Callum Wilson could become West Ham 'hero'

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Wilson could become a "hero" if he stayed to fire West Ham straight back up.

He has urged the striker's agent to point him towards the offer that is on the table in East London, rather than look elsewhere for a move.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested that a one-year extension with the option of a further year would be perfect for Wilson.

"I think Callum's got to be smart here and stick with West Ham. He could be a superstar in the Championship for West Ham," he said.

"He'd be a real handful for a lot of Championship defences, and seeing the sort of squad that could shape up for West Ham, I think Wilson could be having a heyday, and he could really do well.

"If I were his agent, I'd be saying, Callum, let's take a year with an option. Definitely, I think that's a good move, and he could be a hero again and enjoy his football with West Ham in the Championship. He'd get them back up pretty quickly if he started to perform as I think he could do."

Callum Wilson 'likely' to agree Coventry City return as Frank Lampard plan revealed by ex-coach

Coventry return would 'appeal' to Wilson

Former Coventry City assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider earlier in June that a return to the CBS Arena this summer would "appeal" to Wilson.

The Sky Blues have been linked with a move for their former star following their promotion to the Premier League, but are yet to firm up their interest.

Brown emphasised that there would be few negatives for either the player or Coventry if he returned to his boyhood club, and even went as far as to label the link as "one to watch."

Wilson previously struck 22 league goals for Coventry back in 2013-14, a return which helped them avoid relegation from League One.
