West Ham United will be fearing for the future of key midfielder Mateus Fernandes even more after the Real Madrid presidential elections.

Notorious chief Florentino Perez was re-elected at Los Blancos once again, meaning that he will remain in control of the club until at least 2030.

The 79-year-old has been at the helm for 23 years since first taking on the role back in 2000, and has gained a reputation for sealing 'Galactico' signings.

He already has his eyes on more big additions this summer, with the PSG midfield duo Vitinha and Joao Neves both linked to the Santiago Bernabeu of late.

The pair of Portuguese creators have made a serious name for themselves on the European stage in recent years, while West Ham's own Portuguese star has flourished this term.

Fernandes has been linked with a whole host of top clubs after the Irons' relegation from the Premier League, with PSG among those tipped to make a move.

Real Madrid line up signing of Portuguese star

Fernandes have even been linked with Madrid himself in recent days, as the Spanish giants have joined the race to sign the 21-year-old alongside the likes of Manchester United and PSG.

It is almost inevitable that the 21-year-old will leave West Ham rather than play Championship football next term, and a move away could be about to get one step closer.

Journalist Arancha Rodriguez has reported (via Madrid Xtra on X) that Perez's first big signing this summer is likely to be a "Portuguese player."

Fernandes, of course, fits that bill, and with it being one of the biggest clubs in world football, West Ham would surely be powerless to stand in their way if that comes to fruition.

However, even if it is not Fernandes who is being referred to, a move for either Vitinha or Neves could spark a major domino effect in the market.

Losing one of their starting midfield pair would leave PSG searching for a new star, which could in turn, prompt them to firm up their interest in Fernandes.

The French capital club are now back-to-back Champions League winners, and would also be extremely difficult for West Ham to block.

How much will West Ham get for Mateus Fernandes?

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness recently told Football Insider that West Ham could fetch as much as £70million for Fernandes this summer.

The former boardroom man emphasised that the East Londoners must try to spark an "auction" for their outgoing star, in order to get the best possible price.

Wyness also revealed that he has heard that PSG are currently in the box seat to win the race for the former Southampton man, and added that a deal could be done in the early stages of the summer window.

That would surely be an acceptable outcome for West Ham, as it would leave them with plenty of time to source a replacement for the starlet.
