West Ham will 'break even' on Niclas Fullkrug as transfer edges closer - Stefan Borson

West Ham United can avoid losing money on Niclas Fullkrug as the wantaway striker continues to push for a permanent exit.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the German's book value has been "eroded" since his move to the London Stadium.

As one of Tim Steidten's biggest mistakes during his time as technical director, the Hammers splashed £27million on the player in August 2024.

This came after a very successful 2024 Euro campaign for the German international, who scored against Scotland and Switzerland, earning him a move to the Premier League.

The now-33-year-old struggled with his fitness in his first season in England, however, before joining AC Milan for the last six months.

With one goal in 20 games, the Italian giants turned down the chance to sign him permanently, but both Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen have emerged as potential suitors.

West Ham can soon forget Niclas Fullkrug woes

The Irons are not expected to recoup the £27m spent on the centre-forward's signature, but Borson is confident that a huge loss can be avoided.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said: "You've got book profit, but really, most of the time these days, they're just going to want to get out of that transaction.

"They can save the wages and move them on. I don't think their focus is necessarily going to be making a profit.

"But generally, they should be able to, more broadly, break even. This is because his book value has now been eroded, and they won't lose a huge amount of money.

"Although, in the grand scheme of things, it's turned out to be very expensive mistake."

Where does the German rank in West Ham's most expensive mistakes?

In the overall grand scheme of things, West Ham have done a lot worse, especially when it comes to signings in the final third.

Sebastien Haller, Gianluca Scamacca, Nikola Vlasic were all most expensive, and arguably, far bigger waste of money at the London Stadium.

The same can definitely be said for the likes of Max Kilman, Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse, though all three are currently still at West Ham.

With Football Insider revealing that former Rangers figure Nils Koppen is set to arrive as the club's new Director of Recruitment, there will be hope of new transfer tactics this summer.
