Whelan backs Aston Villa to seal 'next level' Ward-Prowse signing after critical update
Noel Whelan has tipped Aston Villa to complete the signing of James Ward-Prowse this summer after the Southampton captain’s stance on a move was revealed.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker claimed the 26-year-old could take Dean Smith’s side to the next level.
This site revealed on (16 June) that Villa want to make Ward-Prowse their third signing ahead of pre-season.
Villa bolstered their ranks with the signings of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich and Ashley Young on a free from Inter Milan.
Football Insider understands as of today (21 June) that Ward-Prowse is interested in swapping St. Mary’s for Villa Park.
Whelan is unsurprised by the centre-midfielder’s stance given the ambition Villa have show in the transfer market.

“I’m not surprised he wants to move,” he told Football Insider. “Villa are showing real intent early on.
“I think the move will materialise, it’s happening. They have already got Buendia through the door so it really is exciting times for Aston Villa fans.
“If they can get James Ward-Prowse as well, another international, they could really reach that next level.
“He was very unlucky not to be in the England squad for the Euros. He would add serious competition for places.
“It would be a very exciting midfield if he was in there with Grealish, Buendia and McGinn. Time will tell if these signings are seen as replacements for Jack Grealish or not.”
