Noel Whelan has claimed it would be a “fantastic signing” if Leeds United snapped up Southampton striker Che Adams in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the lifelong White and ex-striker of the club revealed he would be “over the moon” by the capture of the striker, 23, next month.

As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds have made contact to register their interest in Adams as they look at potential replacements for loan star Eddie Nketiah.

Nottingham Forest tabled a loan offer for Adams last Thursday and are currently in pole position to land him if Southampton give the go-ahead for him to be loaned out for the second half of the campaign.

“If that does come off then that’s a fantastic signing for Leeds, it really would be,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He was immense for Birmingham in a team that did not really have any superstars but Che Adams was a different class that season.

“Snapped up by Southampton, we know he can do it in the Championship, we know he’s got strength and pace, everything that you probably need to give you that added edge and that little bit extra over the other teams, is a Che Adams.

“That would be great if it actually comes off. It might just be talk, we don’t know. I’d be over the moon with that kind of signing.”

Adams scored 22 Championship goals for Birmingham City last season to secure a £15million summer transfer to Southampton.

But he has yet to score for the Premier League club from 15 appearances in all competitions and has not started  a league match since September, with red-hot Danny Ings and his sidekick Shane Long the current favoured pair.

In other Leeds United news, one of the club’s biggest names may have played his last game after heading for transfer talks with Premier League manager.
