Noel Whelan has claimed Barry Douglas will quit Leeds United next year if he fails to win back a regular starting place.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the Scotland international will want out of Elland Road if he remains behind converted wingers in the left-back pecking order.
Leeds were widely hailed when they prised Douglas from Wolves for £3million in the summer of 2018 after his key role in their promotion campaign.
But the left-back has failed to reach the same heights at Elland Road and is now the behind Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas in the left-back pecking order.
“Third choice left-back is a bit embarrassing for Barry Douglas,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I would say he is the best left-back at the club but he is just not doing it.
“We’ve not seen the best of him at Leeds. Fans had such high hopes for him on the basis of his performances for Wolves.
“But it has been stop-start for him at Leeds. He’s been in and out of the side, he’s had some injuries and just hasn’t played well enough when he has played.
“I can’t see him being at Leeds next year if this continues.”
Douglas has made just three Championship starts – the last coming back in mid-August – among his eight appearances this season.
Dallas played at left-back in the win against Blackburn Rovers before the international break and Whelan does not expect that to change for Saturday’s trip to Luton Town.
He said: “Marcelo BIelsa won’t change his team, bar international injuries. He will stick with Luke Ayling at right-back and Dallas at left-back. That’s the way it is.
“Stuart Dallas gives you more going forward than Douglas. He is also more than capable defensively.”
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed the terms of a £5million-plus deal.
