Noel Whelan has raved about Tyler Roberts’ return to the Leeds United starting XI and claimed he “can be better than Samuel Saiz”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider editor Wayne Veysey, the ex-United forward is convinced that the 20-year-old attacker can make a big impact in the remainder of the campaign.
Roberts was handed his first Championship start of the season on Saturday and responded with the first goal and an impressive display as Leeds defeated QPR 2-0 at Elland Road.
Whelan is in no doubt that the Wales international has a huge amount to offer Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
“He’s like a new signing for Leeds,” Whelan said. “He had a fantastic game against QPR and was involved in everything. He got on the ball, turning players and, because he is a striker by nature, he is very forward thinking and likes to drive at defenders and pop the ball off.
“He has a great turn of pace, a low centre of gravity, he’s good with the ball at his feet and his finish was nonchalant.
“I’ve been waiting to see more of him in the number 10 role. He’s a breath of fresh air in that position. Can he be the new Saiz? Absolutely. I think he can be better than Saiz as he is young and has so much room for improvement.”
Roberts has suffered injury problems in each of his three seasons at Leeds and he underwent knee surgery at the end of last season that sidelined him until the end of September.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Newcastle United held an Elland Road transfer mission on Saturday.
