Noel Whelan has tipped Pablo Hernandez to start on the bench for Leeds United against Wolves after Marcelo Bielsa delivered a positive fitness update.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker believes the Spanish playmaker will be forced to bide his time after Rodrigo’s goal-scoring display against Manchester City last time out.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Bielsa confirmed that Hernandez is back available for selection after he missed the last two games with a groin injury.
Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have both filled in as an attacking midfielder in the veteran star’s absence.
However, Whelan believes that fan favourite Hernandez will start Monday night’s game among the substitutes where he can make an impact in the second half of the match.
Asked if he thought the Spaniard would step straight back into the starting XI, Whelan told Football Insider: “That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? I think I go by Marcelo Biels and what he’s done recently and in the past and I don’t think he’ll start him.
“I think he’ll be on the bench, I think Rodrigo will get the nod and start in that number 10 role after getting the goal and being so influential when he came on in the last game.
“I think it’s a really good go-to, I think in the second half, a cameo performance, bringing him on when there are some tired legs or needing that little bit of extra quality to get us over the line, I think that’s a great weapon to have on the bench.
“A fit Pablo Hernandez probably starts the game but someone who’s been out for so long, he’s a great weapon to have coming off the bench. We’ve got to give Rodrigo that opportunity and that chance.
“You can’t change a side that’s been doing so well and somebody that has just got on the scoresheet as well. He’d be very disappointed if he finds himself on the bench.”
