Whelan Exclusive: Leeds should have signed £40m-rated striker instead of Rodrigo
Noel Whelan has suggested that Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard would have been a better signing financially for Leeds United than Rodrigo Moreno.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds forward and boyhood fan at Elland Road believes the Whites will make no money off their new signing when he leaves the club.
Leeds have confirmed they had secured the signing of the 29-year-old Spain international for a club-record fee, with Football Insider able to reveal the Whites will pay an initial £27million which could rise through performance-based add-ons.

It is understood that the total cost of the deal, including the striker’s £100,000-a-week wages, is worth near to £50million over the next four years.
As revealed by Football Insider back in July, Celtic have slapped a £40million price tag on Edouard as they look to ward off any suitors.
Whelan believes that from a business sense, Leeds should have targeted a younger talent who could deliver top-class performances as well as make the club a profit in the future.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I do wonder whether going for someone a little younger might have been a little bit more better business.
“That’s probably why I was a little bit surprised Leeds didn’t pursue Edouard at Celtic – 22-years-of-age, been prolific up in Scotland, you sign a four-year contract for a 22-year-old, there’s the possibility you could sell him for £50-60million.
“For me, that’s looking at the now and later on in his career when he’d be 26. There’s the possibility of making money as well as getting a great player for four, five years.
“With Rodrigo you’re paying £30million, you’re getting four years and that is it. There’s no way of making money so from a business sense that looks a better way to look forward, get someone at a younger age that can be developed and can get better and better and there’s the prospect of making money on that player later on in time.
“With Rodrigo, you’re getting a good player now but that is it – £30million you will not get back.”
