Leeds United could make one or two “surprise” signings during the January transfer window, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has insisted the Whites need new recruits and suggested Victor Orta would be getting in touch with his contacts over potential deals.

The Mirror’s David Anderson has reported Leeds have set sights on at least three new players but do not expect deals to be struck this month despite having money to spend.

It is stated the Whites have set their sights on strengthening three positions in the squad but that the targets they want are not available from their current clubs.

However, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the difficulty of trying to sign players in January, Whelan believes Leeds could still pull a couple of signings out the bag before the window shuts.

Asked if he thought Leeds could pull off a surprise signing later in the window, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah – there’s lots of hindrances in our way these days due to Covid and trying to get players over the line and players into clubs.

“The lack of money, as well, for clubs because there’s no supporters coming in so it’s not as straightforward as what it used to be before the Covid hit. We all know January is a very difficult window at the best of times anyway so this one will be something of a surprise if something comes out.

“Still, Leeds United do things very quickly, very swiftly if something’s available, there will be a lot of phone calls going on in the background, I’m sure, between Victor Orta and some contacts that they wanted in the summer that they couldn’t get through the door.

“They might be pursued now possibly and really pushed to try and get through the door. There’s no doubt we need signings and strengthening in certain areas. To me, I’ll be very surprised if we don’t make one or two signings in this window.”
