Whelan Exclusive: This is how much Leeds will need to spend on signings if they go up
Noel Whelan has claimed “international quality” will have to be added to the Leeds United squad if they gain promotion this season.
The former Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, encouraged Victor Orta to take note from both Aston Villa and Sheffield United’s approach to the Premier League.
Villa spent £130million in the 2019 summer transfer window, adding the likes of Wesley, Tyrone Mings and Douglas Luiz to their squad in big-money deals.
Whereas the Blades only spent £40million, nearly half of which went on signing Oliver McBurnie from Swansea.
Whelan urged Marcelo Bielsa to show faith in his current squad but admitted the club would need to “sign more quality.”
“When you look at the first eleven it is really strong and they can all adapt to Premier League football,” he told Football Insider.

“They have all got the capabilities. Obviously, it is common sense – you have to sign more quality. International quality as well.
“Look at Aston Villa, they spent £130million and it still was not enough. Then you look at Sheffield United and they have kept the majority of their players together and you have seen how strong they are. It is about buying the right player with the right mentality.”
Yesterday Football Insider revealed that the club was already in discussions to add Illan Meslier on a permanent basis.
United currently sit top of the Championship table with all fixtures suspended until April 3 due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Victor Orta is lining up three short-term deals if season is extended.
