Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that Jack Grealish is a “special” player who has the talent to replace Christian Eriksen at Tottenham this summer.
The Denmark international is out of contract in the summer of 2020 and talks over a new deal have yet to yield a breakthrough.
Reports have suggested Eriksen will quit White Hart Lane after seven years this summer and Spurs are interested in signing Aston Villa playmaker Grealish after failing in their bid to land him last summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, our brilliant new columnist Whelan explained why he is convinced Grealish is destined for an elite Premier League club.
“He is special,” said Whelan. “That’s why Tottenham wanted to buy him and why Aston Villa wanted to keep him. Can they keep him if they don’t get promotion? It’s only a matter of time before he goes to a bigger club, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Spurs this summer.
“I think he could be Eriksen’s replacement. He demonstrated his character in the Birmingham derby and has a touch of magic to his game, although he needs to add more goals.
“Grealish has proved himself in the Championship but needs to prove he can do it in the Premier League. Someone like Eriksen does it year in, year out. He is a gamechanger who wins matches with his creativity, and scores his fair share of goals as well.
“Grealish can take over the mantle, and it’s no wonder Spurs want to sign him, but he must deliver more consistently.”
Grealish has transformed the fortunes of Villa since returning from a three-month absence, with the team winning all five Championship matches since his return.
The 23-year-old has made 137 appearances for his boyhood club since joining their academy as a six-year-old.
