Whelan hails Lloris after 'huge' update on his Tottenham future

Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Hugo Lloris after it was revealed he is likely to remain at Tottenham for at least one more season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and Middlesbrough striker claimed the 34-year-old is “hugely important” to the Lilywhites both on and off the field.

Lloris has just over 13 months remaining on his current contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and rejected early attempts by the club to tie him to a new deal.

However, Football Insider understands he is planning to remain at Spurs for at least another year after recent talks with chairman Daniel Levy.

The France captain has made 46 appearances across all competitions this season and has started all 36 of Tottenham’s Premier League games.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the news, Whelan said: “Lloris is hugely important to Tottenham.

“He is their leader, their number one and he is a fantastic goalkeeper. There are not many goalkeepers around, that’s the thing. He has so much experience as well.

“If he is going to see out his contract that is great news for Tottenham. They do not need to venture into the market and spend money in that department just yet.

“His experience and leadership both on and off the field is invaluable. He is one of the best goalkeepers out there, even though he has been hit and miss over the last couple of seasons.”
