Whelan in awe of Everton as Romano delivers 'incredible' Begovic update
Noel Whelan is in awe of Everton as they close in on the signing of Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on a free.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker claimed the prospective transfer is “incredibly smart business” by the Toffees.
According to Fabrizio Romano (18th July), Begovic has completed a move to Goodison Park after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal.
Bournemouth have allowed the Bosnia-Herzegovina international to leave on a free even though he had 12 months left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium.
Begovic will replace Robin Olsen, who spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Everton, as Jordan Pickford’s understudy.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the Begovic’s arrival, Whelan said: “Incredibly smart business.

“To get a player of that quality, who has a wealth of Premier League experience on a free is an absolute no-brainer for me.
“Pickford is your number one and he always will be but to have that quality a backup is just brilliant.
“He is a goalkeeper you can trust and a goalkeeper who can push Pickford in training. His experience will benefit Pickford.
“When you look at the benches of the other top clubs and they have good, experienced keepers. Begovic is just a fantastic signing on a free.”
Begovic has amassed an impressive 252 Premier League appearances in his career from spells at Chelsea, Stoke City and Bournemouth.
He has made 63 appearances for Bosnia-Herzegovina.
