Whelan in awe of 'standout' Klich after 'brilliant' Leeds footage emerges

Noel Whelan has tipped Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich to return to his best form this year after “a brilliant” pre-season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Whites ambassador heaped praise on the 31-year-old and claimed he “has definitely stood out” in the build-up to the 2021-22 season.

Klich scored Leeds’ first goal in a 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Saturday, in what was the final game of their pre-season.

The centre-midfielder fell out of favour at Elland Road at the back end of last season but is in contention to start Saturday’s opening fixture against Man United.

Whelan claimed the Poland international will be looking for consistency this season.

“Klich’s had a brilliant pre-season,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He already had a goal in the bag away at Loughborough and last night’s finish tells me he is sprightly, sharp and ready to make a big impact this season.

“I think they are all itching for the new season to get started. Everyone one of those players will have wanted to play themselves into the starting XI for that first game. It doesn’t get much bigger than an opening day game against Man United.

“Klich is one that has definitely stood out in pre-season and I expect we will see him back to his best now.

“He had a great start to last season and then had a little dip so he’ll be looking for consistency this year.”
