Whelan in awe of 'superb' teenage duo as Leeds footage emerges

Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell after he starred against Guiseley in pre-season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites striker, who was at the game on Tuesday night, also had high praise for his fellow teenager Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville, 19, scored one and assisted one as a young Leeds side kicked off their pre-season with a 3-2 win at Guiseley.

Cresswell, 18, who made his debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in a penalty shootout loss to Hull City last season, captained the side from centre-half.

Whelan claimed the teenagers both have very bright futures ahead of them on the evidence of Tuesday night.

“I was very impressed with Summerville,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “He was very lively and creative.

“There was loads of energy about the whole side even though they were very young and inexperienced. Some of the performances from back to front were superb.

“Cresswell was just immense at the back. He is a massive figure back there for such a young man. He is so assured of himself.

“He has come along so quickly in such a short space of time. His reading of the game is excellent and he looks like a leader. Definitely one for the future.

“It’s great to get a win and 60 minutes under your belt in pre-season. It is so vitally important that happens with a young side and it did. They went out there and did a job.”

In other news, Whelan claims 21-year-old has been handed a ‘huge opportunity’ after Leeds exit confirmed.
