Whelan: It would be a 'massive coup' for Leeds if they win Marcelo race

Noel Whelan has backed Leeds United to pull off a “massive coup” as they reportedly bid to sign Marcelo from Real Madrid.

The former Whites defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is excited at the prospect of the Brazilian moving to Elland Road.

On Sunday (12th June) The Mirror claimed Leeds and Everton are chasing Marcelo as he is not in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

The 33-year-old’s contract expires next summer and the report claims he could be picked up for around £5million.

The left back only made 19 appearances for Los Blancos last season as they surrendered their La Liga crown to Atletico.

Whelan admits Marcelo would improve Leeds’ left-hand side and could pass on some valuable experience to the club’s youngsters.

“That would be a massive coup if Leeds can pull that one off,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s a very professional player who has played at the top level pretty much since he started his career.

“That would be very exciting. He’s someone who can pass on a lot of experience to the younger players there.

“But he’s someone who no doubt would improve that left-hand side. He loves to get forward, he’s a great defender and a set-piece specialist.

“If that’s something the club are looking at doing, that’s very exciting for Leeds fans and fans of the Premier League.”

Marcelo has experienced a glittering career, making 528 appearances for Real Madrid.

He has won four Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles with Los Blancos.
