Whelan: Leeds have the new Ward-Prowse on their hands as 'unbelievable' footage emerges
Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood after he starred in a friendly against Guiseley.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the new Leeds ambassador, who was at last night’s game, compared the 19-year-old to Southampton set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse after the win.
Greenwood scored a sublime free-kick on Tuesday, as a youthful Whites side got the pre-season campaign off to a winning start with a 3-2 victory at Guiseley.
The striker demonstrated his set piece ability on numerous occasions last season, as Mark Jackson’s Under-23s romped to the Premier League 2 Division 2 title.
A £1.5million signing from Arsenal in 2020, Greenwood made his debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in an FA Cup loss at Crawley Town in January.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the teenager’s display, Whelan said: “Free-kicks are his forte.

“Immediately you think about someone like James Ward-Prowse and what an unbelievable dead ball specialist he is. When you see the goals Greenwood has scored from set pieces you put him up there on that mantle.
“It took him a couple of attempts but he got his range right in the end yesterday.
“Another player who possesses an immense amount of ability. To have a weapon like that in your side is great.
“You can see the ability he has but the free-kicks are about the hard work he puts in on the training ground and for that he deserves to be praised.”
