Whelan makes 'high calibre' Celtic signings prediction after 'guarantee' reveal

Noel Whelan insists Celtic must make the Europa League group stage to attract the highest calibre of players in the last days of the transfer window.

The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest comments from Ange Postecoglou.

On 12th August, the Daily Record quoted Postecoglou’s “guarantee” as he said “we’re working awfully hard” to bring new players in before the window closes.

Celtic’s new summer signings have so far impressed.

Kyogo Furuhashi is in red hot form in attack and Carl Starfelt has impressed at the back.

Liel Abada has also been in good form in the Europa League play-offs.

Celtic now face AZ Alkmaar over two legs with the winner taking a Europa League group stage place.

Whelan insists staying in that competition will give the club an edge in the transfer market.

“There is always work going on with new signings,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“Obviously it’s not easy to get bodies through the door. It would be more inviting to top-class players if they know they are playing in the Europa League.

“There’s no doubt about that, that massively changes the calibre of players would could come through the door.

“Everyone wants to play in Europe. There is still a job to do and at the moment, they are getting it done.

“I think there will be some pans burning in the background with players waiting to see if Celtic will be in Europe.

“Celtic need that higher calibre of player, they shouldn’t be signing players for the sake of it.

“They need marquee signings coming in who will help them in Europe and help them challenge Rangers as well.”
