Whelan raises serious Rangers fears amid ‘very worrying’ Barisic news

Noel Whelan insists Steven Gerrard will be sweating over the fitness of Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on Barisic’s condition.

It was confirmed on Wednesday (June 16th), that Barisic would miss Croatia’s clash against the Czech Republic on Friday due to a back problem.

The same problem kept the defender out of Croatia’s 1-0 defeat to England last weekend.

He was selected in Croatia’s squad after scoring four goals and picking up 15 assists last season.

Whelan insists Gerrard will have his fingers crossed regarding Barisic’s fitness after a long and congested season with Rangers.

“Any manager or teammate you play with, you want to see them play,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“You want them to do well and you don’t want to see them picking up injuries.

“It will be very worrying. It’s been a long season for Rangers so that worry is always there for a manager.

“Hopefully it’s just a strain and something he can shrug off. Gerrard will be keeping his fingers crossed.

“He’ll want his player to make an appearance in the tournament and to be free of injury before next season.”

Barisic missed just six games in all competitions as he made 50 appearances for Rangers last term.

The defender moved to Ibrox from Osijek in 2018 and proved to be vital as Rangers won the Scottish Premiership last season.
