Whelan: Rangers have got one over Celtic after 'absolutely massive' Lundstram news via Nixon

Noel Whelan claims Celtic will be annoyed they didn’t beat Rangers to the potential signing of John Lundstram.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the midfielder’s future.

On Sunday (4th July) transfer guru Alan Nixon responded to a Rangers fan who was asking about potential incomings at Ibrox.

Nixon simply responded, “signing imminent”.

Following this, he was asked if this player was Lundstram and replied “chance”.

On Monday morning SunSport also reported that the Gers are the frontrunners to sign Lundstram following his Sheffield United departure.

On 1st June, the Blades confirmed Lundstram will leave Bramall Lane on a free transfer after failing to agree a new deal.

Whelan claims the 27-year-old can be an “absolutely massive” signing for the Gers.

“On a free transfer you’re not putting anything at risk,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“What you are getting is a player who can be absolutely massive for Rangers next season.

“He didn’t sign a new contract at Sheffield United but they still played him which shows how important he was for them.

“He’s a player that’s very aggressive in that midfield with a good engine.

“He also loves to get forward and he’s a leader out there.

“He can enhance Rangers’ squad in a really positive way. That’s all you’re looking to do when you have been rebuilding like Rangers have.

“It’s huge. Celtic will be looking across at them and thinking ‘should we have gone for him?’.”

Lundstram impressed during his debut Premier League season two years ago.

He picked up five goals and three assists in 34 outings during the 2019-20 campaign.
