Exclusive: Whelan reveals the Leeds player who may struggle v Cardiff
Noel Whelan heaped praise on Leeds United for their protection of Illan Meslier but insisted the trip to Cardiff City will be “a different test”.
The former Elland Road striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the Welsh side’s physicality could pose a threat to the 20-year-old.
The young goalkeeper has kept two clean sheets in his two Championship starts since replacing the suspended Kiko Casilla.
Marcelo Bielsa’s number one was found guilty of racially abusing Jonathan Leko at The Valley on September 28.
Although Whelan admitted Meslier has done well since coming into the side, he fears Cardiff may target the keeper.
“He made a cracking save in the first half where he sat on the ball and then scooped it round with his left hand,” he told Football Insider.

“That was pretty much all he had to do all game. We talk about defensive work and off the ball work that Leeds United are all about and they protected him.
“It will be different against Cardiff because they are physical and they will be putting plenty of balls in the box. Meslier will be put under pressure and they have got a very big side so it will be a different test for the young man.”
United were 2-0 victors over Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire derby last weekend, goals from Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford enough to take all three points.
The win sees Marcelo Bielsa’s side move to the summit of the Championship as West Brom were held to a stalemate at Swansea.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider the time has come for one player to quit Elland Road.
