Noel Whelan has revealed Patrick Bamford told him Marcelo Bielsa is happy with his form for Leeds United this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider editor Wayne Veysey, the ex-Whites striker claimed Bamford has the full support of his manager despite supporters growing immensely frustrated by his errant finishing.
The £7million signing from Middlesbrough has started all 11 of Leeds’ Championship matches and scored four goals.
But significant section of Leeds fans believe his tally should be far higher given the number of presentable chances he has squandered.
Many have called for Bielsa to axe Bamford from the starting XI and replace him with on-loan Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, who has scored four times this season without even starting a league game.
“Patrick Bamford has done very well this season,” Whelan told Football Insider. “His performance against West Brom last week was the best I have seen from him at Leeds.
“It was as good as you can get without scoring a goal. I spoke to him after the game and he said the manager’s happy with him as he’s doing what he wants him to do – his work rate, running into channels, pulling defenders out of position.
“Can Eddie Nketiah do the same job as Bamford in leading the line? We won’t know until he starts a league game, but he is a different type of player.
“I know why fans aren’t happy with Bamford as strikers are judged on goals but his overall game is spot-on, he’s doing everything right, apart from putting away the chances.”
Leeds slipped to fifth in the table following their defeat to Millwall last Saturday, their second consecutive away defeat.
They are next in action after the international break when they host Birmingham City on Saturday week.
