Noel Whelan is sickened by the news Jose Mourinho will receive a £16million payout after he was sacked by Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker said the 58-year-old has been “rewarded for failure” and insisted “it is not right” given the hardship many across the globe are facing at this time.
Tottenham announced on Monday that Mourinho and his staff had been dismissed following a run of just one win in six.
The Mirror report ‘The Special One’ will receive a £16million severance package as a result of his sacking.
Whelan pointed to Tottenham’s actions last summer when criticising chairman Daniel Levy.
“When you look at the world we are living in right now and the crisis the world has been through it makes you feel sick,” he told Football Insider.
“It is crazy to think a club can just afford to do that willy nilly.
“When you look at all of the clubs that have been struggling to survive during this pandemic with no fans in the stadiums… They needed help from the Premier League and everyone was reluctant to help yet they can pay £16million to a manager to pay off his contract.
“The integrity of this sport is laughable. Levy is one these people who is in this breakaway remember.
“It makes you feel sick because people need that money more than Mourinho. He is probably still getting paid for being rubbish at Manchester United. He has been rewarded for failure. It is not right.”
