Whelan suggests new Leeds signing imminent as Casilla medical scheduled
Noel Whelan has suggested Leeds United have a new goalkeeper “ready and waiting to come in” as Kiko Casilla closes in on a loan move.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites would not let the 34-year-old go without a replacement lined up.
As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday (July 10th), Casilla is expected to undergo a medical and complete a temporary move to Elche over the coming days.
The Spain international has played second fiddle to Illan Meslier since the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
Whelan claims Leeds would not be prepared to Casilla leave if they did not have a new shot-stopper either in place or ready to join.
Asked if he thought a new goalkeeper signing must be in the pipeline, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely.

“I don’t think we run the club like a semi-pro (outfit). We do things off the back of a chain reaction.
“I do believe that if you’re letting your number two goalkeeper go, you need to have another goalkeeper ready and waiting to come in.
“I’ve got no doubt they’ve got eyes on another prize somewhere to come into the club as soon as Kiko leaves.
“We can replace that body in the squad. It’ll be interesting to see who it might be and what competition Meslier is going to have.”
Casilla joined Leeds from Real Madrid in January 2019.
He has played 62 times and conceded 61 goals since arriving at Elland Road.
However, he made just five appearances last term, three of which came in the Premier League.
