Whelan tells Celtic to complete Nisbet signing after source makes £4m reveal

Noel Whelan wants Celtic to sign Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet as a possible Charlie Wyke alternative.

The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Hoops need more options in attack.

On 2nd July, The Daily Mail claimed Celtic are interested in signing Nisbet and Football Insider has been told that a £4million bid would persuade Hibs to sell.

Nisbet, 24, scored 18 goals and supplied eight assists for Hibs last season, including two strikes in his three outings against Celtic.

On 16th June, Football Insider also revealed the Hoops are in talks with Wyke about a long-term deal after his Sunderland contract expired.

Whelan insists Celtic need a Wyke-like striker and claimed Nisbet could fit the bill.

“They need a different kind of option,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“We still don’t know what’s going to happen with Odsonne Edouard who’s in the last year of his contract.

“There’s still loads of time in the transfer window for clubs to make moves.

“They need a player who can play like Wyke. Him, Nisbet, they can lead the line.

“They have more aerial strength and ability to run past people. We’ve seen how destructive they can be from those wide areas.

“Look at the goals Wyke scored from Aiden McGeady’s service. He’s a different type of centre forward to Leigh Griffiths.

“I think him or a player like him would do well at Celtic. They need a big brave boy who can get on the end of crosses and destroy defences like Nisbet.”

On 1st July Celtic announced Griffiths had signed a new one-year deal.

He has the chance to revive his Parkhead career after being limited to mainly substitute appearances during the 2020-21 season.

In other news, the winner has been named in Celtic’s race to sign a Premier League 28-year-old as terms are agreed.
