Whelan thrilled by 'fantastic' Manchester United-Leeds news

Leeds United have been handed a “fantastic” opening fixture next season with a trip to Manchester United, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested there is no better way to kick off the campaign than a clash between fierce rivals.

As revealed on Wednesday (June 6th), Leeds start their season with a trip to Old Trafford.

The Whites’ first home game will see them host Everton a week later.

Leeds lost 6-2 away at Manchester United back in December.

However, Whelan insisted he was still buzzing over the prospect of an opening day trip to Salford.

“I think I heard the cheers from all over Leeds when the fixture list came out,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“It’s an amazing game to start off with. A tough game, absolutely, but a cracking one to start the season.

“What’s better than going to Old Trafford? Leeds versus Manchester United, the rivalry continues and it’s the first game of the season.

“I hope everyone’s raring to go, new signings for both sides, I would imagine as well. It’s one you can really get your teeth into straight away.

“Hopefully it’s not going to be the same as last season, I’m sure it won’t be.

When you look at the Premier League fixtures and the season as a whole, it’s a great one to start off with.”

Leeds managed to hold Manchester United to a 0-0 draw in the last meeting between the clubs in April.

The reverse fixture will see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men visit Elland Road in February.
