Noel Whelan has tipped Allan to return to the Everton starting XI in a change of formation against Chelsea on Monday.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested either Bernard or Alex Iwobi could make way for Allan after he was benched versus West Brom.
Carlo Ancelotti utilised a 4-4-2 against the Baggies with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin partnered up front in the 1-0 win.
Ancelotti hooked Iwobi off for Allan, 30, just before the hour mark after watching the midfield toil against Sam Allardyce’s men.
Meanwhile, Bernard also came off at the Hawthorns with six minutes left to play.
Whelan suggested Allan is almost guaranteed to return to the starting XI in place of one of the wingers.
Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “There’s no doubt Allan has to start. He’s been great since he got there, he is Ancelotti’s man.
“I think that 30 minutes is a telltale sign he’s back, he’s ready, he’ll be in the starting XI. Could you change the formation possibly? I think that’s what you might have to do to fit Doucoure, Gomes and Allan in there.
“You saw the midfield of Chelsea against Liverpool with Mason Mount and the energy. To get anything out the game, you need a really strong, defensive-minded midfield.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he played all three of them in a 4-3-3. Sometimes you need a change of formation against certain teams to be a little bit more stable.
“We can see what Chelsea are about now. Even when they’re under pressure, they hit you with a counter-attack.
“You might want to stick all three in there against this Chelsea outfit. Be really aggressive and solid.”
Everton now face a Chelsea side who beat Liverpool 1-0 on Thursday night.
