'He'd be my first signing' - Exclusive: Whelan urges Leeds to land 'Real talent' loved by Bielsa

Noel Whelan has suggested that Leeds United should go all out to ensure that Ben White is their first signing of the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Elland Road striker claimed that the 22-year-old has got “every kind of attribute” needed to be an England international one day.

The Brighton loanee has established himself as a key component in Marcelo Bielsa’s side this term, with the manager demonstrating his huge admiration by remarkably naming him in the starting XI for all 37 of United’s Championship matches so far.

And Whelan has admitted that he would be delighted if his former club could secure a permanent move for the youngster.

“Oh God, I’d love to get him signed on a permanent,” he told Football Insider. “He’d be my first signing if we do go up to the Premier League.

“Such a real talent – he will end up playing for England at some point, there’s no doubt about that.

“He will cost a lot of money, but he would be worth it, that’s for sure. He’s got every kind of attribute you want from a centre-half in the modern game.

“The only problem is that there are a lot of other clubs who want him, and a lot of other clubs who could be playing in Europe, which could be a key decision for him.”

White has helped to ensure that Leeds have conceded just 30 goals in the Championship this term – the lowest total in the division by some distance.

The defender is yet to score for United, but does have two assists to his name so far.
